Book #18 in 2010 (Audio)

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Read by Michael Prichard.

I'm not good at reading classic literature alone. I never seem to grasp the deeper meaning. I envy students who can discuss this stuff under the direction of a teacher.

Book-burning fireman has an epiphany.

Can I give a classic book a 3 star rating? I'm sure the shortcomings are all mine.

Book #17 in 2010 (Audio)

Foul Play, A Sophie Metropolis Novel by Tori Carrington. Read by Rebecca Rogers.

8 hours.

The further adventures of Sophie Metropolis, P.I. Sophie takes a case from the wife of the Mets' star pitcher. Interesting story and plot twists. Adequate reading by Ms. Rogers, but I miss Anna Fields.

3.5 stars.

Book #16 in 2010

Worst Case by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge.

More classic Patterson, albeit with a co-author. Typical page-turner. Features Detective Michael Bennett and is set in Manhattan and the surrounding areas.

I like the NY setting in this series better than the DC setting of the Alex Cross novels. However, I really can't stand the "my 10 adopted kids" shtick of the main character. The whole crazy home-life thing gets old fast.

3.5 stars.

Book #15 in 2010 (Audio)

Now You See Her by Cecelia Tishy. Read by Anna Fields.

8.5 Hours.

An interesting mystery starring psychic Regina Cutter. Tight writing; interesting plot moves along nicely. The ending is a surprise, but not the type that comes out of left field. All in all, a good read. Of course, since it is read by my favorite narrator, it is just that much more enjoyable. I will seek out other writings by this author.

3.5 stars.

Book #14 in 2010 (Audio)

Thanks for the Memories by Cecelia Ahern. Read by Sile Bermingham.

12 Hours, 19 minutes.

This was a lovely story, but should have been about 20-25% shorter. The crossing of paths and missed opportunities went on just a bit too long.

I loved the character of the dad, who was charming and witty. I wish I'd had a father like that. Many times I laughed aloud at his dialog.

This was the first time I've heard this narrator. I was put off by the accents at first, but Ms. Bermingham's voice quickly grew on me.

Four stars for an interesting pretense. I probably would have given it another half star if it was shorter.

Book #13 in 2010

Wishin' and Hopin', A Christmas Story by Wally Lamb.

A peak into 1960's life through the eyes of a 10 year old attending parochial school.

Solidly four stars. I almost categorized this under "humor" too. Lots of funny parts.

Book #12 in 2010

Sleepwalking in Daylight by Elizabeth Flock.

Wow, a powerful, moving story of an unfulfilled mother and daughter and the choices they make that lead to their undoing. This story will likely stay with me for a long time.

4.5 stars.

Book #11 in 2010

Give It Up! My Year of Learing to Live Better with Less by Mary Carlomagno.

A woman's attempt to give up one thing each month of a year: alcohol, shopping, elevators, newspapers, cell phones, dining out, tv, taxis, coffee, cursing, chocolate and multitasking. An interesting read, although a little preachy with all the, "I learned so much by giving up....this month!"

3 stars.

Book #10 in 2010

I, Alex Cross by James Patterson.

Another fairly forgettable page-turner featuring detective Alex Cross. Not as good as some of his other novels. About 2/3 through the book, I'd guessed the identity of Zeus. Probably the best thing happened in the epilogue when Kyle Craig called offer Alex congratulations on his engagement. Will Craig make a comeback? Readers can only hope.

3.5 stars, barely.

Book #9 in 2010 (Audio)

Knit the Season by Kate Jacobs. Read by Carrington MacDuffie.

Third installment of the Friday Night Knitting Club series. Ho, hum. Maybe it's time for Ms. Jacobs to retire these characters. Also, I didn't care for the reader. She made Kathryn and KC sound too whiny.

7.5 Hours.

Barely three stars. The writing is ok, but come on, a little plot, please.
