Tagging sci-fi even though I don't know if it strictly qualifies.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

 A strange organism begins consuming the sun's energy and the earth is in mortal danger.  Against this backdrop, the nations of the world collaborate on a mission to save mankind.  But how does a junior high school teacher fit in?

I don't usually read science fiction, and I might have given up on this book, except that the characters are so well developed that I stayed with it.  I'm also not a big fan of flashbacks, but they're used well in this novel.

3.5 stars for me, but I bet a sci-fi enthusiast would rate it higher.

The Missing: Book 1. Found. By Margaret Peterson Haddix.

I put "audio" in quotes because this is a print novel that Jessie read aloud to me.

I really enjoyed this book. Great plot, good characterization, excellent suspense. I usually have trouble wrapping my brain around time travel, but the author did a very good job handling the topic.

I'm not good at reading classic literature alone. I never seem to grasp the deeper meaning. I envy students who can discuss this stuff under the direction of a teacher.

Can I give a classic book a 3 star rating? I'm sure the shortcomings are all mine.
